Flexible printed circuit boards (flex PCBs) consist of very thin polyimide films with extremely fine copper structures embedded in them. This allows circuits to be bent in three-dimensional space and used in dynamic applications—a clear advantage over rigid printed circuit boards. In modern, technically sophisticated assemblies, miniaturization, weight reduction, lower assembly costs, and cost pressure are becoming increasingly important.

Wiring harnesses and connectors can therefore be reduced or even replaced by flexible printed circuit boards. Typical areas of application include wearables, smartphones, sensor technology, foldable displays, keyboard foils, lighting systems—and anywhere else where complex electronic circuits need to be accommodated in a very small space.
